Bait and Switch
The Humiliating Secret part 5

Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. (Eph 5:6)

'Bait and switch' describes a fraud where a person is seemingly sold one thing only to find out that it is another. God's word, (and he cannot lie), warns us, "Let no one deceive you with empty words". Things like immorality, impurity, and covetousness, promise to satisfy, but the wrath of God comes upon people who practice them. Jesus says, "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly." (John 10:10)

But our enemy uses our desires to tempt us: Each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death. (James 1:14-15) The Spirit of God does not call us to follow our desires, rather he calls us to abide in Christ Jesus, our Satisfaction. Bait and switch entices us to follow our desires, but the empty stomach cannot fill itself. Following our desires gives birth to sin, and sin cuts us off from Christ Jesus.

It is the cheat of all cheats. But knowing how it works, even though we have fallen for it many times, does not give us the power to avoid it. Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, and shrewd in their own sight! (Isaiah 5:21) And self determination is useless. Who among us, by their promise to God, "I'll never do that again", have found freedom in their heart, and satisfaction in Christ? Then will I also acknowledge to you that your own right hand can save you. (Job 40:14)

Let no one, human or otherwise, deceive you with empty words. Repentance is a gift from God. He has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ... so that we might live with him (from 1Thes 5:9-10) One believer, when finally set free from slavery to sin, into the satisfaction in Christ, said, "Who wants to eat dirt clods, when you are satisfied with apples?" It's the only way to be free from the bait and switch: Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart. (Psalm 37:4)

Lord Jesus, you alone satisfy my heart's desire. Thank you for making a way, for bringing your life to us, that we could know your love, and be free to walk with you. Help me to trust in you, and to deny the desires that lead me away from you. When I stumble, grant me repentance to turn quickly to you. Keep working in me, to believe your promise, and to value your steadfast love and presence above all things. Knowing you is eternal life.

Today's very great and precious promise

He fulfills the desire of those who fear him; he also hears their cry and saves them. (Psalm 145:19)

You have God's Word on it.
